Council of Europe Committee on Bioethics discusses protection of intersex and trans children and young people

On the 31 May 2016 the Council of Europe Committee on Bioethics discussed the protection of the human rights on intersex and transgender children and young people in their meeting in Strasbourg. Kitty Anderson (OII Europe), pediatric surgeon Mika Venhola and Richard Köhler (TGEU) presented the key human rights challenges and exchanged views with the members of the Committee on Bioethics.

One of the objectives of the Council of Europe is to protect the individual’s dignity and fundamental rights with regard to the applications of biology and medicine. Following the adoption of the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine (Oviedo Convention), the Committee on Bioethics is assigned the task to conduct regular re-examinations foreseen in the Convention and its Additional Protocols and to develop further its principles.
