FRA side event on LGBTI children rights + OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting

On the 29th of September 2016, during the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting of the OSCE in Warsaw, the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union held a side event focusing on LGBTI children and youth.

FRA presented findings on the rights of LGBTI children focusing on gender identity and the rights of intersex children, especially legal and medical aspects. It drew on the Agency’s comparative legal analysis-update.

This was followed by presentations from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, Queer Youth and Student Organisation, the Organisation of Intersex International – Europe, and the Polish organisation ‘Campaign Against Homophobia’ which reported on current concerns and challenges which LGBTI youth face, especially in their education and school environments.

OII Europe gave a presentation on the situation of Intersex youth in the EU and beyond as well as recommendations for safer school environments for intersex children.

Later in the day, during the plenary session on the rights of children in situations of displacement, OII Europe´s secretary, Kitty Anderson provided a presentation on the specific risks facing Intersex children and youth in situations of displacement was provided. This was the first time that the issues facing intersex people were brought up at the OSCE.
